- boldness and courage: committed to teaching an undergraduate political science course before finishing law school
- freedom in expression and communication: saying what's on my mind, even if it's uncomfortable
- confidence: in talking with colleagues, I have something to contribute
- acceptance: realization that I don't have to be perfect or accomplish anything for my family to love me
